So … what is coaching actually?

Birds are interesting, right? They can appear to have a life of singing to each other and just hanging out together. Yet ever notice a bird's ability to navigate long distances? Birds are able to migrate long distances, following complex routes learned over time. Coaching can help you see areas in your life that may seem distant or difficult.

Maybe you’re stuck in an uncomfortable situation at work or you find you take on every project and wonder why no one appreciates you. Some feel they never get anything right. There are those who struggle participating or finding fulfillment in life.

So … what IS coaching? (The technical stuff, but extremely helpful!)

  1. According to Co-Active Coaching by Henry Kimsey-House, et al., coaching “offers a unique way to listen, explore, raise awareness, make choices—in fact, take risks—and, always, to build on what was learned along the way to inform the next choice, next step, and the next learning opportunity.

  2. Another definition from Megan Gilmore of Lark’s Song: “a professional relationship between a coach and a client that is focused on increasing the client’s well-being and goal attainment through the development of self-awareness, holistic discovery, and resonant choice.”

Whoa! How many conversations do you have that offer empowerment to find your own answers like that? One client said:

I feel way more connected to who I am, what I need,
and what I want than ever before. ~Katie S.

What if YOU could say that? Wouldn’t you want to look back after coaching and feel that kind of forward motion—to actually see a path towards honest empowerment and fulfillment?

That’s what you can expect from coaching.

Don’t settle. When you have a coach who’s been through ICF (International Coaching Federation) accredited training and been certified, you can exactly expect that. Be sure to ask for training credentials and certification of any coach you consider.

Bottom line: coaching is a safe place to explore and discuss perspectives in a bigger and broader way anywhere you feel stuck coming up with a direction on your own.
